How to Select Gloss, Matt, and Laminating Varnishes

Select varnish by finished-surface target, substrate, protection need, and verified finishing performance.

Gloss, matt, and laminating varnishes are surface-treatment options with different roles. Gloss varnish can add visual depth and protection; matt varnish controls reflection and feel; laminating varnish can reduce part of a lamination process only where the complete finished product meets its required performance. A similar appearance is not proof of equivalent scratch, fold, glue, or use performance.

Trial and acceptance method

Confirm the substrate and base-ink condition before coating. Keep stock, ink, speed, and coating-unit condition fixed while changing only one coating variable. Record process, transfer/coating condition, drying or cure, sample number, and observation time.

Evaluate only after full drying or cure. A non-tacky surface is not proof of complete UV cure or final performance. Complete planned foiling, die-cutting, creasing, gluing, stacking, or transport simulation before sign-off. A laminating-varnish project should be compared against the existing laminated product under the same acceptance test.
