How to Select Offset and UV Inks by Substrate

Select ink by substrate, cure or drying conditions, and finishing requirements, then verify it on press.

Ink must transfer, set or cure, and survive the required finishing process on the actual substrate. The same color can require a different ink system on coated paper, board, PET, PVC, PP, labels, or a pre-laminated surface.

Select the system before the color

Traditional offset and UV systems have different operating and cleaning requirements. Food contact, low migration, low odor, chemical resistance, or regulatory requirements must be stated before a trial and confirmed through the applicable product documentation.

Trial sequence

  1. Provide press type, substrate sample, color target, coverage, lamp or LED configuration, speed, finishing sequence, and current issue.
  2. Print on the actual production substrate. Keep material, press speed, and process conditions fixed while comparing ink.
  3. For UV work, record lamp type and condition, reflector system, speed, and ink film. A surface that feels dry is not proof of complete cure through a heavy ink layer.
  4. After normal cure or drying, perform the relevant tape adhesion, bend/crease, rub, and finishing tests. Retain the approved color standard, ink batch, substrate, and process record for repeat work.
